5 Of The Best Web Applications For Content Management

UK web hosting companies all offer distinct advantages and features but they all have their own benefits. Regardless of which one you choose they would need web applications to manage a website. There are many of these that are free and open source. Here are five of the best.

Most of these would have specific pros and cons and it is difficult to determine which is the best. From the point of view of overall functionality and ease of use we would probably start with WordPress and Drupal. Joomla webhosting, Expression Engine and Silver Stripe are pretty much on the same level however. These are all bases on PHP and use MySQL.

Drupal is easiest to install although it might not take as little time as WordPress. Although it might not be as basic to use as other platforms it does have greater flexibility and functionality. The interface is distinctly different from other Content Management Systems (CMS) and it makes use of a control bar above each page. Along with Expression Engine it is best for SEO but it does have certain snags. It does not offer rich text editing for example so HTML is required for formatting.

How content is managed on all of these platforms is quite individual. Drupal has all its content arranged in blocks with each being assigned to a type of content. Joomla also assigns according to content but this is also tied to a specific page location. Its admin page is also separate and has all of the functions laid out intuitively.

Joomla is very easy to use overall but is does have a greater number of limitations. It is easy to create a page for example but because each item has to have its own alias it is more difficult to create a link to one page from different menus. Joomla also seems to pose the most problems for overall configuration.

WordPress is very similar to these two platforms and its administration interface is almost a combination of both. It also has an intuitive and easy to use page where all the tools can be accessed. This can be customized to show only chosen information that makes it even more quick and easy to use. One thing that you have to remember is that WordPress also offers a free blogging service which is not the same as its CMS.

There are a large number of templates that can be selected from in WordPress. These also combine very simply with widgets which make it easy to add functionality. They can also be moved around without having to change code at all. One of the easiest of these platforms to use is also Silver Stripe. With a WYSIWYG interface you can make changes very quickly. Customization also makes use of drag and drop functionality. Navigation is tree based and security and permissions are also easily customized.

One of the web applications that offers ease of use and unlimited functionality is Expression Engine. It is still very easy to use but does require knowledge of PHP. Any one of these platforms would make it easy for most people to create a page once they have found UK web hosting.

UK web hosting from UK Web Solutions Direct gives you plenty of choice for apps to manage your content. Joomla website hosting for example is one of the most popular systems
